Red and Black Blues

As we wade through this summer’s transfer market, I am reminded that financial structure is one of the most glaring contrasts between the sports leagues of the USA and the domestic soccer leagues of the ‘rest of the world’. By and large, the big American sports franchises (with some exceptions like the NY Yankees) try […]

Where Nets vs Galacticos (Could) Happen

Brandon Jennings, considered the best high school basketball player in the country this past season, will be taking his game to Europe next season because he didn’t ‘pass’ the SATs and so can’t play the requisite one year in college. This move has touched off a lot of speculation about whether American high schoolers […]

6+5 = better futbol?

Obiora @ July 3, 2008 # No Comment Yet

Recently, FIFA agreed in principle that Sepp Blatter’s proposed “6+5″ limitation on domestic futbol clubs was a good idea. For those of you who haven’t heard of it, the rule would provide that a club team must start a match with at least six players who would be eligible to play for the national […]

A few thoughts on Euro 2008:

If you missed Euro 2008, you missed one of the best sports tournaments in recent memory. Watching Fernando Torres score the winner against Germany was especially gratifying for this fan given the criticism leveled at El Niño for not finding the back of the net much during the rest […]

SK @ June 26, 2008 # 3 Comments

If you’ve spoken to a soccer fan this month, chances are they’ve been engrossed in the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament, which will determine European soccer bragging rights for the next four years.  And if you haven’t been following, Sunday’s final will pit Germany against the winner of today’s semifinal match between Russia and Spain.
Perennial powerhouse France […]

Some thoughts on the Champions League Final won by Manchester United over Chelsea on penalty kicks:

- Didier Drogba has always been a bit of a hothead but his petulant little face slap at Manchester United’s Nemanja Vidic was pretty stupid even for the brash Ivorian. Rumored to be pursued by the likes of AC […]

Soccer and the Sporting Calendar

Every four years, the World Cup invades homes across this third rock from the sun. And most of the United States yawns. I watched the World Cup in 1994, 1998 and 2002. Each time, I thought that this might be a fun game to follow after the World Cup was over. Then […]

The REAL No Fun League

SK @ May 14, 2008 # No Comment Yet

Let me tell you what really bothers me about baseball.
Steroids?  Nope.
Bloated salaries and ticket prices?  Not really.  After all, anyone that paid attention in Econ 101 will tell you that’s simple supply and demand.
Roger Clemens hooking up with 15 year-old girls?  Yea, that bothers me, but I’m guessing (hoping) that pedophilia isn’t a league-wide issue.
No, […]

The Endless Impact of Sport

R-Dawg @ May 6, 2008 # One Comment

I decided to catch a film at the Tribeca Film Festival this year.  Given this was my first time attending a movie at the fest, I wanted to watch something which I felt was the essence of Tribeca- an independent documentary.  Kicking It fulfilled my requirements: a showing on a weekend night, an independent documentary, and […]

Fans Take Over?

SK @ February 6, 2008 # No Comment Yet

Fans Of Liverpool FC Want To Buy The Team Rumors came out last week that Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder is considering hiring Jim Fassel as his new head coach. Upon which, a Redskin fan colleague of mine asked if there was a way the fans could take the team away from Snyder.

And naïve as it may sound, fans of Liverpool FC in Britain are actually trying something like this. Unhappy with the team’s American ownership, a group called Share Liverpool FC announced a plan last week to try to purchase the team away from the current group led by George Gillett and Tom Hicks. The basis of this plan is getting 100,000 Liverpool fans to donate £5,000 each, in order to raise enough capital to purchase the team and build a new stadium.
