Where Nets vs Galacticos (Could) Happen

Obiora @ July 11, 2008 # No Comment Yet

Brandon Jennings, considered the best high school basketball player in the country this past season, will be taking his game to Europe next season because he didn’t ‘pass’ the SATs and so can’t play the requisite one year in college. This move has touched off a lot of speculation about whether American high schoolers […]

Sonic-less in Seattle

SK @ July 10, 2008 # 3 Comments

It’s been a few days since the legal system finally caved in and gave Clay Bennett and company the permission to leave Seattle without professional basketball.  I have to believe that it doesn’t hurt any less.  The last court the Sonics played in was, unfortunately, a legal court and not a basketball court.

For me, the memory […]

Soccer Anyone?

SK @ June 26, 2008 # 3 Comments

If you’ve spoken to a soccer fan this month, chances are they’ve been engrossed in the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament, which will determine European soccer bragging rights for the next four years.  And if you haven’t been following, Sunday’s final will pit Germany against the winner of today’s semifinal match between Russia and Spain.
Perennial powerhouse France […]

Your Move Dirk…

Little SK @ June 23, 2008 # No Comment Yet

There IS another guy who has been with the same franchise for 10 years, and had a chance to lead that team to a championship, and he was ironically picked right before Pierce (and immediately traded for Robert “Tractor” Traylor and his bag of Funyuns). Unfortunately, Dirk Nowitzki’s story hasn’t ended as happily…yet.

The Truth, The Ticket, and Jesus

SK @ June 18, 2008 # No Comment Yet

Before this season, the Boston Celtics were an afterthought in the NBA.  It had been 21 years since they last hoisted the Larry O’Brien trophy.  In between, the Chicago Bulls won 6 titles, the LA Lakers won 5, and the San Antonio Spurs won 4.  Lenny Bias and Reggie Lewis, hailed as potential saviors of […]

The REAL No Fun League

SK @ May 14, 2008 # No Comment Yet

Let me tell you what really bothers me about baseball.
Steroids?  Nope.
Bloated salaries and ticket prices?  Not really.  After all, anyone that paid attention in Econ 101 will tell you that’s simple supply and demand.
Roger Clemens hooking up with 15 year-old girls?  Yea, that bothers me, but I’m guessing (hoping) that pedophilia isn’t a league-wide issue.
No, […]

Trojan and Mayo Kickback Sandwich

Obiora @ May 12, 2008 # No Comment Yet

ESPN blew up former USC athlete OJ Mayo and the USC basketball program on Outside the Lines this past weekend. It was a damning and thoroughly well-done piece. And not surprising at all, coming on the heels of the Reggie Bush scandal.

I’m one who believes that 99% of college athletes, even those on […]

Bandwagon Jumpin’; Voodoo Hexes

Little SK @ May 7, 2008 # 2 Comments

I have a confession.

Before the Mavs current run of postseason appearances, I made it an annual tradition to pick a playoff team to support. I would shamelessly leap onto their bandwagon in April, and just as shamelessly jump off in June.

This year, I’m reviving the tradition and my pick (drum roll please…) is Chris “The Real MVP” Paul and the 2008 New Orleans Hornets! (Can they switch names with the Jazz already?)

I know you’re probably filled with questions, but just hear me out (and save your not-so-righteous indignation for later).

Pick and Pop - 5/3

SK @ May 3, 2008 # No Comment Yet

Almost all of the first round of the playoffs is in the books.  For all the talk of Western Conference superiority and parity, none of the series out there went 7 games, and there were no upsets.  Meanwhile, the East produced a near giant killer in the Sixers, and the Celtics-Hawks series has gone to a […]

Requiem for the Sad-vericks

Little SK @ May 1, 2008 # 4 Comments

It’s one thing to root for a bad team with no talent. It’s another thing to root for a team with no heart. A team that tantalizes you with its potential, and just when your hopes are at their highest, they devastate you with a wimpy, unfocused, joyless series.

The second half of Game 4 was one of the only times in my life that I felt ashamed to be rooting for the Mavs. Not to put too fine a point on it, but I felt humiliated.

Pick And Pop - NBA Weekly Bullets

SK @ April 26, 2008 # No Comment Yet

The first week of the 2008 Playoffs is in the books.  Here are my thoughts:

Tim Duncan’s improbable 3-pointer will be one of those plays where you say “I remember where I was when…”  Holy shit.  Not only did it effectively win the Spurs the game, it could have broken the Suns back for the entire […]

Battle Of The Acronyms

SK @ April 19, 2008 # 2 Comments

KG.  CP3.  KB24.  LBJ.  We really love to acronymize our athletes.  But only one acronym matters for the purpose of this article: MVP.
So who wins it?  All four have had seasons worthy of the award, and would have run away with it in any other year.  It’s fitting that the most exciting finish in the […]

Let the ‘Real’ Madness begin

Little SK @ April 12, 2008 # One Comment

Around the time that UCLA was squeaking by Texas A&M in the tourney by a score of 51-49 the Western Conference began the most competitive playoff push ever. The stakes have been higher and the teams have been playing with more urgency than I’ve ever seen before in any sport. Every game is like a game 7 and we’re about to wrap it up by throwing the best eight teams into the Octagon to see who comes out with least amount of blood on them. Let the games begin.

Rock, Chalk and Next Year’s Setup

Obiora @ April 11, 2008 # No Comment Yet

Congratulations to the Kansas Jayhawks for one of the more breathtaking title runs in recent memory. Mario Chalmers’ 3-pointer to force overtime was reminiscent of Christian Laettner’s shot to beat Kentucky in 1992. Except that Chalmers’ shot was in the title game whereas Laettner’s was only in a Regional Final. Memphis certainly deserves much praise […]

Jayhawks and Front Runners

SK @ April 8, 2008 # No Comment Yet

First off, congrats to the KU Jayhawks for their improbable victory last night.  The game was close, but Memphis still appeared to have it in hand throughout the night.  This sports fan actually contemplated going to bed with about 5 minutes left in the game, because it actually wasn’t all that exciting until the last two minutes.  […]
